题目材料:
Scholars have advanced various reasons for the small number of biographies that have been written about African American subjects. Some have observed that biographical studies are not considered ambitious projects by academic institutions and thus are avoided by scholars who are seeking tenure and promotion. A more important reason, however, may be that autobiography has been the favored medium of expression in African American culture from its inception, while biography has been accorded lower status. The "I" of autobiography receives considerably more cultural respect than the "she" or "he" of biography. This preference can best be understood in light of the project of reclaiming personal identity. For example, autobiographical slave narratives were works through which African Americans articulated their individual identities in the face of oppression. Another reason for the paucity of biographies is that the existence of autobiographical narratives by African Americans can deter biographical writing about them.
