The operational complexity (number of steps and decisions made during a process) of Acheulean tool production technologies emerging around 1.8 million years ago far exceeds that of the earlier Oldowan artifacts and suggests to some researchers a significant increase in toolmakers' cognitive capacity. However, we should not assume that a more sophisticated production technology will always be more complex: it is possible that better planning or problem solving leads to simpler, more efficient solutions rather than to more complex ones. For instance, late Acheulean flake tools known as the Kombewa type were made by removing large sharp flakes from a boulder core. Such tools are an elegant but simple solution to the problem of producing a cleaver-like tool without the thousands of steps involved in making a typical Acheulean hand axe.
