The belief that Polynesian seafaring technology degenerated after the Polynesian expansion from west to east ended (around 1300 C.E.) relied on two related premises: traditional Polynesian wisdom that ancestors' skills exceeded those oftheir descendants and the argument that attenuation of long-distance seafaring must have involved declining maritime technology. But recent research indicates that the Polynesian oceanic spritsail-a large, efficient four-sided saildeveloped much later than has been assumed, incorporating technology that arrived in western Polynesia after 1500 C.E.. If so, the initial settlement of eastern Polynesia during the eleventh to thirteenth centuries was accomplished using an older sailing rig, the double spritsail, that was limited to sailing in the direction of the wind, making the process of colonization more difficult than usually assumed.
