Bleaching leaves corals' skeletons visible under their transparent tissue, but not all white coral colonies display this feature, raising the question whether all white-shaded colonies are bleached. Researchers evaluated Montastraea cavernosa colonies of different color types (dark brown, light brown, bleached, and white) and found that while conventional techniques failed to discriminate white from bleached colonies, other techniques enabled a clear distinction among these shades. Subsequently, reef monitoring surveys conducted in Brazil revealed that the proportion of bleached and white colonies is similar, thus suggesting that current coral reef surveys may be overestimating the bleaching of M. canernosa.
