题目材料:
Defenders of historical study often deploy some version of George Santayana's aphorism that says “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. In common parlance, that opaque and paradoxical utterance becomes a utilitarian formula to assert that one can extract specific, fact-based lessons from history. But nothing could be more alien to Santayana's ironic sensibility, and so the appropriation of Santayana's statement by recent intellectual history is one of the minor ironies of post-profound nudity. As Santayana knew, a remembrance of things past yields an awareness of their distinctness from the present. The uniqueness of each historical moment offers resistance to utilitarians in search of practical knowledge for the present.
